What is pelvic floor physiotherapy?
The number one question I get since becoming a pelvic floor physiotherapist is, what exactly IS pelvic floor physiotherapy?
Well, I’m glad you asked!
Pelvic health physiotherapist is a protected title reserved for physiotherapists who have taken additional courses. We take a holistic mind body approach to pain and treat different conditions like urinary incontinence ( bladder leaks) painful intercourse, painful periods, constipation and other bowel and bladder concerns to name a few. We are also able to perform internal vaginal and rectal exams. Ok, that sounds …off-putting to some - but basically I have just added another tool in my toolbox as a physiotherapist. The internal part of the assessment is completely optional.
I am still a “regular” or orthopedic physiotherapist by training, in fact I worked the first 4 years of my career doing just that! Now I have a special interest in working specifically with women who struggle with their pelvic health.
You may hear it called pelvic floor physio, pelvic health physio, pelvic physio, - they’re all the same. That being said not all pelvic floor physiotherapists are the same. There are many even more specific certifications and courses you can take.
Along with my pelvic health certifications, I have also taken courses in postnatal fitness, female hormones, pregnancy and birth prep, low back pain, pelvic girdle pain, diastasis recti ( if you’re curious they’re listed in my “about”page.)
The part I love the most about being a pelvic floor physio is how holistic our approach to care is. Its so much more than exercise for promotion of health and healing.
So if you are dealing with bladder leakage, pelvic organ prolapse, diastasis recti, painful intercourse, any other bowel or bladder issues, pelvic pain conditions like endometriosis, you’re pregnant or newly postpartum then you are going to want to see a pelvic floor physio. It will change your life <3
Stay wild, stay weird, stay you. <3
