So what is your pelvic floor and why should you care?!
Women know more about how their phones, then how their bodies work”
Lets talk about your pelvic floor. Most people know they have one, have heard of a kegel but that’s about as far as we get. It is either blamed for everything or completely forgotten. Pelvic floor physiotherapy has been getting more and more popular with social media but it is hard to find good quality information, so lets dive into what it is and why its important.
Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that sit at the bottom of your pelvis often referred to as a basket or a hammock. There are three layers to your pelvic floor muscles and they have different functions and roles within multiple systems of our body. They atttach front to back from your pubic bone to your tailbone and side to side from your sits bones (ischial tuberosities) They also surround your urethra ( where you pee from), your vaginal opening (where you insert a tampon or a 🍆 if that’s your thing), and your anus ( where your 💩 comes out)
They are an integral part of your core system and have 5 main functions.
💦 they keep you dry! My fav function- thank for you keeping my undies dry and my farts in.
👯♀️they keep your pelvic organs inside your body- also super helpful #support
🍆 they play a role in sexual function and pleasure- okay also really appreciate this one
🏋🏼♀️they create stability for your spine and pelvis with movement - got persistent hip or low back pain? let’s check your pelvic floor muscles
👍🏻they act as a sump pump which basically just means circulation - less interesting but still important
And as I’ve said before the function of your pelvic floor depends on so much more then a kegel.
One more #funfact- they are the first muscle to contract in response to stress. So if your someone who “carries their stress in the neck or jaw, you probably also have some pelvic floor tension!
PSA- this is where doing a kegel would NOT be helpful- please see a pelvic health physio for your concern 👍🏻
Lastly, like any other muscle in the body they are susceptible to all of the same injuries and issues, so let’s start treating them that way!!
